Dreaming of crystalline sea waters and white sandy beaches

Writer: soniamelodiassoniamelodias

The island of Menorca (or Minorca) is part of the Spanish archipelago of the Balearic Islands, along with the islands of Ibiza, Majorca and Formentera and its name comes from the Roman word Minor.

It is the quietest and second largest island of the Balearic archipelago. It has 53 km of width and approximately 700 km² of total area. Despite its small size, this island has been coveted by several peoples since time immemorial, as its history testifies, because the natural harbor of Máo is classified as the best, in this location of the Mediterranean.

The population of the island is 94 thousand inhabitants (2010 census) and the local currency is the euro. The language spoken on the island is Spanish and Catalan, but the locals still have their own dialect: the Minorcan Catalan.

The island has eight administrative divisions: Ciutadella, Ferreries, Es Migiorn Gran, Es Mercadal, Alaior, Sant Lluís, Es Castell and Maó (or Mahon), the most important urban centers being the municipality of Maó, which is the present capital and Ciutadella, the old capital and also an important point of the island, with almost 30,000 inhabitants each.

It is an ideal destination for those who want to rest, but at the same time, combine cultural visits with the exploration of small beaches - the "coves" - that leave nothing to be desired for those of the Caribbean.

UNESCO declared the island in 1993 as a Biosphere Reserve, thanks to its natural diversity and richness. The coast of the island is marked by "coves" and bathed by warm, crystalline waters, without undulation of beautiful shades of blue, that whisper "go ahead and plunge" and have a strong magnetic appeal. The landscape is decidedly one of the greatest natural treasures of the island.

Tourists have only recently arrived on the island, which allows it to maintain the status of "the quietest" of the Balearic Islands, escaping the negative effects of mass tourism.

It is inevitable to fall in love with the island of Menorca ...
