Is consciousness exclusive to humans?

Sadly, there are still many people who consider animals to be inferior and even disposable.
Some of these people are simply mean, but most of them have severe lack of knowledge.
Although there is no cure for human nature, what is the same as saying that there is no cure for evil, in what concerns ignorance we are always able to learn and evolve.
Contrary to what the Greek philosopher Socrates and later his disciple Plato advocated, knowledge is not innate, quite the contrary, it is acquired through experience, of our experience, as Aristotle later argued, and therefore all of us, without exception, can learn and consequently evolve.
When we humans sleep we go through different stages of sleep. One of these phases is called REM (rapid eye movement) and it is usually at this stage, the deepest, that we dream. To dream is one of the indicators of our consciousness, that makes us human and this is an indisputable fact.
Starting from this premise, if animals also dream, just as we humans do, then, too, such as we, they are aware of themselves and others, in other words, they are conscious, right?
So, if animals dream, we´re forced to admit that consciousness is not exclusive to humans...
It seems to me this is intuitive, simple and evident. In fact, for me, it wasn´t necessary any kind of proof, because it is obvious that they are sentient and conscious beings, just like any of us.
But, for the more skeptical, I ask you to pay some attention to a sleeping animal and observe that during REM they do dream, for they manifest it physically.
There fore they have consciousness, as any of us and, as such, you have to respect them!
